Google Merchant Center account suspended? A Shopify recovery guide
What a Merchant Center account suspension means for a Shopify store, how to find the exact account-level issue, and how review requests and cool-downs work.
Updated · Checked against Google's Merchant Center Help
When a Merchant Center account is suspended, every product stops showing in Shopping ads and free listings, and fixing individual products does nothing until the account issue is resolved. For Shopify stores the cause is usually one of a few account-level issues. The way back is the same: find the exact issue, fix the store, then request review carefully, because Google limits how often you can ask.
Find the exact issue first
In Merchant Center, open the Needs attention area. It lists account-level issues with their status and the countries affected.
Note whether it says suspended or warning. A warning period (7 or 28 days) means you still have time, and Google allows one courtesy review during it.
Read the issue name. Misrepresentation, website needs improvement, unverified phone number and policy violations (such as restricted products) each need different fixes.
Check whether merchant verification is requested. Reviews may be unavailable until it's done.
Common account-level issues for Shopify stores
Misrepresentation: missing or inconsistent contact details, policies, business identity or pricing. See the misrepresentation guide for the full checklist.
Website needs improvement or not working: password-protected storefront, empty collections, placeholder theme content or broken checkout.
Unverified phone number or business information in Merchant Center settings.
Policy violations from specific products, such as restricted supplements, weapons parts or counterfeit-looking listings.
Product data that doesn't match the store, such as prices or availability in the feed that differ from the site.
How the review process works
Choose "I fixed the issue" after making changes, or "I disagree with the issue" if you believe it's a mistake. Google says you may only have one chance to disagree.
Reviews may take up to 7 business days, and sometimes up to 2 weeks. You get an email at request and at completion.
If issues aren't resolved by the second review attempt, a one-week cool-down may begin, and it may get longer after each unsuccessful review. Support can't bypass it.
Once approved, products become eligible to show within 24 hours.
A safe order of work
Fix the website and Merchant Center settings for the specific issue.
Make sure the product data source isn't empty and that prices and availability match the store.
Complete merchant verification if it's requested.
Wait for the changes to be live, then request one well-prepared review.
Automatic detection
Find affected products automatically
FeedRescue evaluates deterministic rules first, assigns the issue to FDR-039, and then uses constrained enrichment only when it can explain or extract from existing product facts. The scanner preserves Shopify as the catalog source of truth and keeps Merchant Center diagnostics tied to product and variant examples.
Get a second pair of eyes before you request review
Send your store URL and we'll check your site and product data against the issue Google flagged, and tell you what to change first. Free, no install, and we reply within one business day.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know why my account was suspended?
The Needs attention section names the account-level issue. The notice is often general, especially for misrepresentation, so fix everything in that issue's area before requesting review.
How many times can I request a review?
Google doesn't give a fixed number. It says you may only have one chance to disagree, and a one-week cool-down may begin if the issue isn't resolved by the second attempt, growing with each unsuccessful review.
Will my Google Ads stop when Merchant Center is suspended?
Shopping and Performance Max product ads that use the suspended account's products stop serving. Other ad types that don't use the product feed aren't affected by the Merchant Center suspension itself.
Should I uninstall and reinstall the Google & YouTube app?
No. Reconnecting the channel doesn't clear an account-level issue and can create duplicate products. Fix the issue and use the review process.
