Fix a Google Merchant Center misrepresentation suspension on Shopify
Why Google suspends Shopify stores for misrepresentation, the store transparency checklist to fix first, and how to request a review without triggering a cool-down.
Updated · Checked against Google's Merchant Center Help
A misrepresentation suspension stops all of your products at once, and it's the most common reason a Shopify store's whole Merchant Center account goes dark. Google's policy covers listings or websites that leave out relevant information or give misleading information about products or the business. Google doesn't say which detail triggered it, so the fix is to make your store's identity, policies and prices impossible to misread, and only then request a review.
What Google treats as misrepresentation
Google treats some of these as egregious, which means suspension without a warning. Others, such as unavailable offers or unreliable claims, come with a warning at least 7 days before suspension.
A false or hidden business identity: business name, contact details, or your actual location and where orders ship from.
A virtual or fake address shown as headquarters while operating from somewhere undisclosed.
Pricing that hides the total: taxes, fees, surcharges, recurring costs or the billing interval left out.
Return windows that start at purchase instead of delivery for international orders, or refusing returns your policy allows.
A prominent delivery promise with a longer processing time hidden in small print.
The Shopify transparency checklist
Contact details: a Contact page with a real email, phone number and business address, the same as in Merchant Center's Business info. Shopify's Settings > Policies includes a Contact information policy; fill it in.
Policies: Refund, Shipping, Privacy and Terms of service filled in under Settings > Policies, linked in the footer menu (Online Store > Navigation), with return windows and who pays return shipping stated plainly.
Shipping: delivery times on product pages and in the shipping policy that match your Merchant Center shipping settings, including handling time.
Prices: the same total on the product page, in the cart and at checkout. No fees that first appear at payment.
About page: who runs the store and where it operates from. If you dropship or fulfill from another country, say so.
Claims: remove fake countdown timers, permanent "limited time" sales, made-up reviews, and health or performance claims you can't support.
Product data: prices, availability and attributes in the feed matching the product pages exactly.
Requesting the review
Google's review process for misrepresentation asks you to complete merchant verification first. That can include a government-issued ID or business documents, requested on the Needs attention tab. Then audit your store's transparency and data consistency, and choose either "I fixed the issue" or "I disagree with the issue".
Treat each review request as scarce. Google says you may only have one chance to disagree, and if the issue isn't resolved by the second review attempt, a one-week cool-down may begin, which may get longer with each unsuccessful review. Google support can't shorten it. Reviews can take up to 7 business days, and sometimes up to 2 weeks.
Mistakes that keep accounts suspended
Requesting review the same day, before the site changes are live and crawled.
A footer address that differs from the Merchant Center address or the one on your policies.
Policy pages copied from a template that still name another business or another country.
Fixing the site but leaving mismatched prices in the feed.
Automatic detection
Find affected products automatically
FeedRescue evaluates deterministic rules first, assigns the issue to FDR-039, and then uses constrained enrichment only when it can explain or extract from existing product facts. The scanner preserves Shopify as the catalog source of truth and keeps Merchant Center diagnostics tied to product and variant examples.
Send your store URL and we'll go through your site against this checklist and tell you exactly what to change before you request review. Free, no install, no access to your Shopify admin needed, and we reply within one business day.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a misrepresentation review take?
Google says reviews may take up to 7 business days, and in some cases up to 2 weeks. You get an email when you request the review and when it's complete.
Why won't Google tell me exactly what's wrong?
Misrepresentation notices are deliberately general. That's why it pays to fix everything on the transparency checklist before using a review request.
Can I just open a new Merchant Center account?
No. For egregious violations Google says it suspends accounts without warning and doesn't allow you to list content again, and new accounts linked to a suspended business are typically caught. Fix the site and use the review process.
Does Shopify's default checkout cause misrepresentation?
No. Shopify's checkout is secure by default. Suspensions come from what the store shows or leaves out: contact details, policies, pricing and claims.
